Keeping our bodies healthy and active is extremely important. But people don’t always realize that mental health is a part of physical health. Just as we work hard to keep our bodies in top-notch condition, we want to keep our minds healthy and joyful. Here are five ways that you can stay healthy mentally.
1. Focus on the positive. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in all the bad things that are happening. This is the quickest way to tear yourself down! Instead, focus on the good things. You may want to keep a running list of the bright spots in your day. Firstly, it will teach you to notice the happy moments in your life. Secondly, it will give you something to read through when you need a reminder of how beautiful your life really is. Focusing on the positive will give you a unquenchable joy.
2. Rest your mind. Our minds process immense amounts of information in a single day. You have responsibilities to take care of, decisions to make, and issues to consider. With all this to keep us busy, we often forget to give our minds a break. To keep your mind healthy, however, you need to find ways that you can rest your mind. Take some time to be outside, find a relaxing book to read, or do some light exercise. Your mind will be far more able to function efficiently when you are well rested.
3. Journal. Sometimes it is hard to keep our thoughts and emotions organized. We can’t even figure out what we think or how we feel about something. We become disillusioned with the huge amount of details we have to keep track of and all the varying things that are vying for our attention. This can be remedied by keeping a journal. In fact, you may want to keep two journals. The first would be a technical journal, where you record details you need to keep track of (such as budgets or work responsibilities). The second would be a place for you to record personal thoughts and feelings about your life. Journaling definitely helps you get your thoughts sorted out.
4. Keep your body healthy. It is an undeniable fact that our physical state affects our minds. If our bodies are not cared for, our minds will take a hit as well. If, on the other hand, our bodies are well-cared-for, our minds far are more likely to thrive. Make sure you are getting plenty of water, making healthy food choices, and exercising regularly. Also, make sure that you are taking the necessary supplements or vitamins to keep you going strong. Your mind will benefit greatly from your body’s health.
5. Talk about yourself. People often shy away from discussing their struggles with others. This stems from a variety of reasons, but it is often simply because we do not want others to judge us. However, closing up and keeping our struggles to ourselves is often a great mistake. Our minds turn inward on the problem, only intensifying it, instead of looking outward for new insights and perspectives. Find a close and trusted friend whom you can confide in. Share your personal joys and sorrows, accept their compassion, and listen to their any advice they may have. If you are overwhelmed with intense emotional or mental issues, consider talking to a counselor. Talking about yourself to other people definitely helps your mind deal with tough issues, whether big or small.
Mental wellness is just as important as physical health. In fact, it is a part of physical health. With a little extra care, your mind can become strong just like your body can!
